I have a spawning pair of these fish in my 1800L reef tank. They are peaceful fish and lively swimmers. They constantly seek small pods to eat, but never have harassed small gobies or any other fish or corals in the system. (It is possible that they have eaten my tiny hermit crabs.)
Every night precisely at 6pm they spawn on the open water. Male is sometimes aggressive towards the female, so tank should be large.
Seconds before the light goes off, these fish bury themselves under the sand and sleep there. During the day the female turns over the sandbed on her sleeping area to keep it aerated/clean. When introduced to the new tank, or when harassed by aggressive tankmates, these fish can hide under the sand, even for weeks.
Spawns in a small cave. As a pair, female spends her day eating algae, while male guards the cave. Life expectancy about 2 years.
