Monomyces rubrum (Quoy & Gaimard, 1833)
Monomyces rubrum ist eine solitäre, großpolypige Steinkoralle, die keine Symbiose mit energielieferenden Zooxanthellen eingegangen ist, sondern ihre Energie für ihr Leben, Wachstum und Vermehrung aus dem Fang von kleinem Zooplankton gewinnt.
Der Artname "rubrum" bedeutet "rot", was sich auf die Farbe von Monomyces rubrum bezieht.
In einer nachgewiesenen Wassertiefe von max. 1030 Metern dringt für Fotosynthese betreibende Endosymbionten kein Tageslicht mehr vor, vergl. Trotzdem wäre Monomyces rubrum sicherlich ein optisches Highlight in einem Meerwasseraquarium, allerdings fehlen längerfristige Haltungs- und Fütterungserfahrungen, wie sie z.B. von Tubastraea-Steinkorallen vorliegend.
